What Public Security Do We Want? Qualitative Research on Public Security

This publication is part of the project “Segura Essa Ideia: Jovens Articuladores pelo Direito à Segurança (JADS)”, which aimed to produce reflections and recommendations to deal, in a participatory manner, with the theme of public safety and violence against youth, involving young people, students, teachers and families from the region of São Mateus and Sapopemba (São Paulo).

Support: National Secretariat for Policy on Drugs, Ministry of Justice, Federal Government / Oxfam Brazil

The project was developed in three articulated phases. The first of these was training on the subject of public security with ten young people aged 15 to 20 years living in the regions of São Mateus and Sapopemba, which took place over ten months. They conducted the second phase of the project, which resulted in the creation of eight groups for dialogue, spaces for reflection and collective debate that pointed out possible ways to develop better public security policies. At the end, the young people made an artistic intervention expressing their perception on the issues dealt with throughout the project.

This publication presents a systematization of debates and proposals for public safety, presented in the eight dialogue groups held between june and july 2016. It will be sent to various civil society groups and to the Ministry of Justice, seeking to inform the elaboration of public security policies, taking into account the specificities of the youth of these regions.
