The goal of Indicador de Letramento Científico (ILC) is to monitor the evolution of science skills of the Brazilian young and adult population – from 15 to 40 years old. And thus to encourage public policies and provoke society with regards to the importance of science and learning in school to form young people more prepared for the exercise of citizenship, to be inserted in the market and to contribute even more to the economic development of Brazil.
The ILC took as its starting point the Indicador de Alfabetismo Funcional (Inaf) (Indicator of Functional Literacy) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa). Held by the Abramundo Institute, in partnership with Instituto Paulo Montenegro and Ação Educativa, its challenge was to measure how much of the scientific knowledge acquired throughout the school life is applied in the everyday life of the economically active population. Thus, it was established in order to complement the results of exams such as Pisa, Prova Brasil and Enem, which present measurements regarding the school age.
