Paulo Montenegro Institute and the NGO Ação Educativa – partners in the creation and implementation of the Indicador de Alfabetismo Funcional (Inaf) – organized the present report to present the analyzes and interpretations of the results of the Brazilian adult population’s literacy levels measurement, held in the second half of 2007.

Carried out since 2001, Inaf Brasil is based on interviews and cognitive tests applied to national samples of 2,000 people representative of Brazilians from 15 to 64 years old, living in urban and rural areas in all regions of the country.

The year 2007 was marked by a significant increase in the space dedicated to education in the Brazilian media: analysis of school performance indicators, discussion of government and civil society plans and proposals, and the attentive coverage of successful initiatives have certainly contributed to the promotion of quality education for all to become part of the priority agenda of Brazilians.

And Inaf / Brasil seeks to contribute to this debate, bringing complementary and unpublished data, focused not only on those who attend the school but on the population as a whole, stimulating the promotion of actions and public policies that allow the incorporation of growing portions of Brazilians to the contemporary literate community.
